Entry from: Cusco, Peru Entry Title: “The guidebooks warned us…” Entry: “On Wednesday we left our much-enjoyed city of Arequipa and began a LONG bus ride to Cusco(approximately 11 hours), stopping through Puno on Lake Titicaca and giving us a preview of where we will be later. The ride was going by pretty quickly, and we were enjoying the 2nd class American movies we were seeing (eg, Torque, House of Wax), when the bus stopped on the side of the highway, and the engine was turned off. Now, the guide books warn you about possible engine break-downs, and the unreliability of buses, but up to this point we hadn´t experienced any of these problems (other than an hour late bus on our way to Arequipa). We saw the driver outside with a set of wrenches in his hands, and it smelled like oil, so we knew we could be stuck for a while. Similar to travelling on a plane, the people in charge of the buses here don´t tell you what´s going on, and you´re just left hoping everything will be fixed. Luckily, we were only stopped for about half an hour, and continued on our way. Our bus was unfortunately not direct to Cusco, and we had to stop in Puno to left others off, but the bus company was nice enough to buy a to-go dinner for each of us poor saps still looking at a another 6 hours on the bus.
